1602-1674 Philippe de Champaigne Locations His artistic style was varied: far from being limited to the realism traditionally associated with Flemish painters, it developed from late Mannerism to the powerful lyricism of the Baroque. It was influenced as much by Rubens as by Vouet, culminating in an aesthetic vision of the world and of humanity that was based on an analytic view of appearances and on psychological truth. He was perhaps the greatest portrait painter of 17th-century France. At the same time he was one of the principal instigators of the Classical tendency and a founder-member of the Acadmie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. His growing commitment to the Jansenist religious movement (see JANSENISM) and the severe plainness of the works that it inspired has led to his being sometimes considered to typify Jansenist thinking, with its iconoclastic impulse, in spite of the opposing evidence of his other paintings. Isenbrandt, Adriaen
Flemish Northern Renaissance Painter, ca.1500-1551 South Netherlandish painter. He became a master in the Bruges Guild of St Luke in 1510, at which time the records specify that he was a 'stranger' and childless. Shortly afterwards he married Maria Grandeel, who bore him one child (d 1512). After his wife's death in 1537, Isenbrandt married Clementine de Haerne, with whom he had three daughters. One further daughter was born through an extra-marital relationship with the innkeeper Katelijne van Brandenburch. According to contemporary sources, Isenbrandt was famous and well-to-do. He held important posts in the Bruges Guild of Sculptors and Saddlemakers, serving as deacon nine times between 1518 and 1538 and as governor twice (1526-7 and 1537-8).
Joseph Thors
(ca. 1835 - 1884) was an English landscape artist who exhibited widely in England during the late 19th century. Relatively little is known about Thors's life though he was recorded as living and working in London, then Birmingham - he also travelled for a while in France. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, British Institution, and Society of British Artists in London, and was also exhibited in Birmingham between 1869 - 1900.
